Has poor battery life doomed the HTC ThunderBolt?

Article by Jack

The HTC ThunderBolt was first rumored to be hitting Best Buy on February 14th — in fact the store started taking preorders for the device on February 6th. When the 14th passed, credible leaks pegged February 24th as the launch date for the device. But we saw no ThunderBolt launch last week, and now rumors suggest that the device will not launch until March 4th or 10th. Long Battery life of Mobile Phone Battery at buy-battery.ca

It seems that the most accurate information on the ThunderBolt may have been leaked by Droid-Life on February 8th. The report shows a screen shot of a Verizon portal that says the ThunderBolt has been delayed with “No ETA at this time.”

On Friday, Engadget reported that the ThunderBolt’s htc battery life — or lack thereof — may be the reason for the device’s delay. According to Engadget, some ThunderBolt testers experienced a battery life of only three hours, due possibly to the device’s LTE 4G capabilities. Signal reception issues are also said to play a role in the ThunderBolt’s delay.

HTC and Verizon are rumored to be working on a firmware fix for nokia battery life and signal reception issues. However, it’s hard to imagine that a firmware update could increase the ThunderBolt’s reported 3 hour motorola battery life to anywhere close to a full day’s use. That’s bad news for HTC, and perhaps worse news for Verizon, who is relying on the ThunderBolt to show off its high speed LTE network.

Verizon and HTC have remained suspiciously silent about the ThunderBolt’s release date, suggesting that the companies do not have a good idea of when a fix for the device is expected. This leaves customers who preordered the device in a tough spot — it’s been three weeks since Best Buy started taking preorders for the ThunderBolt, and with no launch date in sight preorder customers may have to wait for a few more weeks before the device is launched.

Even when the ThunderBolt does launch, it’s unclear if the device’s buy battery life will be respectable. We’d advise potential ThunderBolt buyers to wait until the device has been thoroughly reviewed before picking one up.
