I really like your quotes about technology towards the beginning of your post, particularly the one by Dockstader, stressing the importance of “having the curriculum drive technology usage, not having technology drive the curriculum.” That is a trap that is easy to fall into if you have nice new tech tools in your classroom – we don’t want the cart to lead the horse.
As you pointed out in your last paragraph, there is a big difference between simply using technology to meet particular objectives and fully integrating technology in education. The challenge in technology integration is really integrating – embedding the use of tech tools and resources into day-to-day learning. Depending on the availability of hardware, software, and Internet connectivity, technology is all-to-often an add-on to traditional lessons. While adding a technology component is a good first step, it is important to realize that that’s not the end. One of the reasons I liked the Technology Integration Matrix is that it provides concrete examples of what various levels of integration look like.
I think that fully integrating technology occurs when teachers have tech tools on hand, like in Kelly’s 1:1 5th grade classroom, and it means we won’t end up with a divide between tech and non-tech learning activities. I believe that technology integration means that it technology is embedded, incorporated, assimilated – it’s the melting pot not the salad bowl.
You also chose to answer the question, “How should technology be used?” I think this is one of the more challenging questions to answer – there are certainly many applicable uses of technology in the classroom, but there are so many variables as to what is used and how it will be used. Differences in curriculum, availability of hardware/software, teacher experience, staff development will all affect how technology should be used. Next year, inservice training in our district will be based on “Using Technology with Classroom Instruction That Works,” based on the work of Robert Marzano. This is a great starting point as it provide concrete examples that are supported by research and applied to standards-based instruction.
